February Newsletter

APPAREL ARTS
• We moved some of the dates ahead for the patternmaking intensives. If you are planning to take some, check the dates again to make sure those dates still work for you.
• Remember, you need to study and practice to learn patternmaking and design effectively. Do the home, make real garments, and practice drafting outside of class as much as you can.
• We still have room in the Construction class starting in April. Tailoring has one more spot open if anyone is interested.
• If you are interested in adding a second patternmaking class to your schedule, we have openings in Monday evening, Tuesday morning, Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon. Let me know if you want to double up.
• We are ordering another overhead heater. It should be installed within the next month or so. Sorry for the delay, we are having issues with electricity which we have to sort out before installing.
• If interested, please send in pictures of your final work. We are planning to put them on the website to showcase your great designs.

• The March Garment Industry 411 workshop is on March 9, and the topic is Fabric Sourcing and Inspection.Contact lana.hogue@gmail.com. Be sure to mention you are from Apparel Arts and you will most likely get a discount.
• Saturday, March 5, St. Helena, CA
Courréges revolutionized design and lives in 1965 when he embraced the space age in fashion — shortening skirts, throwing away the bra, using high tech materials and strong architectural cuts and construction. This is the first class in the Draping Series in which we learn to drape tailored garments.  It’s an excellent introduction to the St. Laurent Le Smoking class (next in line) and also the Balenciaga weekend coming in May.  The focus is on sculptural fabrics and molding the shape to fit.  This method of draping frees women to move in their clothes; it is attractive on all figure types and yet retains Parisian standards of fit.Change of location:  Due to policy changes for public use at the College, this class will be held at a new location in downtown St. Helena, near shops and restaurants!  Fee $149, limited to 10.
FASHION DESIGN COMPETITIONS AND SHOWS
• The fashion show Explode la Mode is coming to San Francisco now, and we’re for new local designers. The show is going to be on April, 30th at Som Bar. We are not charging the designers to join the project, but we expect them to divulgate the event for their friends thru social networks, like we are doing in our facebook, twitter and myspace, and we are divulgating. The show will promote their name! For the catwalk, we offer them the support team and models, and the students have to create 5 looks for the show. It’s an independent fashion show, and we want to create a big team! Contact: Andrea at explodelamode@gmail.com.

• My name is Kerry Brown and I work with LittleMissMatched (www.littlemissmatched.com).  I wanted to reach out to you to let you know about a Design Competition we are holding – called Project Sock – as I thought the students in your program might be interested. Project Sock is a sock design contest, open to all ages -  and the winning sock designs are actually manufactured and included in our Fall sock line…pretty cool! If you think you might be interested, you can visit www.projectsock.com for more details or feel free to email me if you have any questions (kerry@littlemissmatched.com).
