APPAREL ARTS NEWS
• We have some openings in the weekly patternmaking classes if anyone wants to double up for the summer. Right now we have openings in Monday, 5:30 to 8:30 pm, Wednesday 9-12, Thursday 5:30 to 8:30 pm and Friday 1-4 pm. Also, we are opening a Saturday 1:30 to 4:30 class starting July 16 if anyone would like a spot in that weekend class. Just let me know.
• Reminder: The price of the patternmaking class is going up $10 in June. If you are paying $220 now, you will be paying $230 in the next unit. The Saturday class is going up to $175 from $165. If you would like to pay 6 or 12 months ahead up to June 1, you will be charged the old rate. This is the first increase in over 3 years.
• The July through December schedule is up on the website. Please sign up early if you want a class or classes. Classes do fill. For those of you who wanted Continuing Draping, we have a 4-week session starting in July.
• A startup entrepreneur by the name of David Zilberman recently contacted me about a startup idea that he is working on and asked if I could introduce him to indie/emerging designers and fashion students who he could interview for research that he is doing on the needs and challenges of fashion designers.  I understand that the interviews are done by phone/web and usually take only 10-15 minutes and David is offering a $10 Starbucks gift card as a thank you for taking part in the interview. Now casting style-savvy people with all levels of fashion experience to compete
for an unprecedented grand prize – YOUR BRAND manufactured and  sold through one of the
largest retail stores in the country! Looking for inspired designers at all levels - amateur, semi-professional, do-it-yourselfers, emerging designers, established retailers, folks who make their own clothes, sell online, work within the fashion industry or outside of it.
• The Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle would like to invite your fashion design students to participate in an exciting new fashion competition, North by Northwest (N x NW). The purpose of the competition is to inspire creativity, encourage emerging designers to seek out new directions, and spark awareness of new trends in Nordic fashion. Two lucky winners will win a trip to Iceland!
The competition is open to fashion students, recent fashion school graduates (received fashion degrees within the last 2 years), and emerging fashion designers; who reside on the West Coast of the US or Canada . There will be two winners: one chosen by a panel of fashion industry experts and one winner, the People’s Choice Winner, chosen by a public vote. The competition opens May 5, 2011 and the deadline for entries is July 15, 2011. Entries must be an original creation that is wearable and inspired by Nordic design: either an article of clothing, or a fashion accessory such as shoes, a hat, scarf, handbag, piece of jewelry, etc. The entries will be judged on creativity, feasibility, and execution. Entry packages will include a resume, 2 – 4 sketches, and a photo or video of the completed fashion piece.
12 entries will be chosen as finalists. The pre-selections will be based on the sketches plus a photo or video of the created item. The finalists will send in their created fashion items, and these 12 entries will be displayed at the Nordic Heritage Museum in conjunction with the Nordic Fashion Biennale.
the 2011 Nordic Fashion Biennale taking place this fall at the Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle , Washington , from September 30 – November 13. This will be the first time this event is being held in the United States . The finalists’ entries will also be posted online, and people around the world will be able to vote on their favorites. The two winners will be announced on November 15, 2011. The prize will be round-trip airfare from Seattle to Iceland , 3 nights’ accommodation in Reykjavik , and tickets to a special event during Reykjavik Fashion Week.

OUTSIDE CLASSES
• Center for Pattern Design (www.centerforpatterndesign.com) has some interesting classes and lectures coming up shortly on Balenciaga. Always keep an eye on the Center for Pattern Design. They are continuously bringing in interesting designers and patternmakers to lecture and give seminars.
